On December 29, 2023, Doug Gordon, after 80 years in this temporary home, has departed to join his Savior and Lord for eternity in his heavenly home above. The family will gather for a graveside service at Greenwood Cemetery and friends are invited to join them at the Country Club of Orlando on Sunday January 7, 2024 at 4:00PM to celebrate Doug’s life with a time of fellowship and refreshments. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Salvation Army-Orlando Area Command.
Doug was born in Orlando on May 16, 1943 to the late Burton C. and Emma P. Gordon at Orange Memorial Hospital (now Orlando Health). He came home from the hospital to 1107 Greenwood Avenue where he lived until going off to college. Doug attended Delaney Elementary, Cherokee Jr. High, and Boone High School where he was a three-sport athlete lettering in football, basketball, and baseball. He graduated in 1961, received the “Outstanding Athlete of the Year” award and a scholarship to Rollins College where he played baseball and soccer. Doug met his wife Judy Newsom at Boone and transferred to the University of Chattanooga in 1962 to be with her. They married in 1963 and upon graduation, he went on assignment to Southern Bell in Miami and was then transferred to Bell Labs in New Jersey. Doug returned to Orlando in 1972 to go to work for his father-in-law, John B. Newsom, at Newsom Oil Company, purchasing the company in 1994. Doug coached little league baseball for 10 years at Delaney Park where he had played as a youth. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Country Club of Orlando, a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, and attended Discovery Church. Doug is survived by his wife Judy, his children Doug Jr. (Julie), Garret (Kristin), and Danny (Nichole). His grandchildren are Katie, Doug III, Lizzy (Kip), Michael, Austin, Jamie, Grayson (Kait), Ashton, and Mia. His great-grandchildren are Julianna, Scout, Piper, and Birdie. Doug was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and Christian. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered.
