Penelope Harbilas

July 2, 1926 — January 31, 2019

Penelope (Penny) Harbilas, 92, of Orlando, died on January 31, 2019 after a long and happy life. The eldest of five daughters, she was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, to John and Asimo Rousakis of Greece. In 1958, Penny and her husband, John, moved to Orlando, Florida, after visiting the area on their honeymoon. The house on Shamrock Court where they lived for 48 years is filled with happy memories; the back door was always open for family and friends to drop by. In 2016, they moved to Westminster Towers Orlando.

They were founding members of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Greater Orlando where Penny spent decades serving as a Sunday school teacher, in the Ladies Philoptochos Society, and at the Greek festival. Penny always welcomed newcomers and became Godmother to many. She often went out of her way to help someone in need.

Penny loved children and spent 20 years working as an attendance clerk at two Orange County schools where she knew every child by name. Her greatest joy was seeing or hearing of her children, grandchildren, and extended family spending time together. In retirement,
she enjoyed traveling with John and their close friends George and Vivian Fotieo.

Penny is survived by her loving husband and children, Nick (Callie), Bill (Stella) and Elaine (Diane); grandchildren, John, Matina, James and Justin; and sisters, Anne Thomas, Sophie (Manny) Papadoconstantakis, and Connie (Jim) Kouchalakos. She was preceded in death by her sister Stella Georgantas. Penny leaves a legacy of many cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, Godchildren, and friends whom she loved dearly.
