Obituary

Richard F. Basen Sr., a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, great- grandfather and cherished family man, passed away in Orlando, Florida, on October 25, 2026, at the age of 88.

Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Richard was the son of William J. Basen and Anna Basen, both of whom preceded him in death. He was one of four brothers, alongside Bill, George, and Bob Basen, all of whom also preceded him in death. Growing up in Cleveland helped shape Richard’s strong work ethic, loyalty, and appreciation for family values that would guide him throughout his life.

Richard’s life changed in June 1958 when he met his future wife, Judy, while they were both working at Sherwin-Williams Paint Company in Cleveland. That meeting began a remarkable love story that spanned 66 years of marriage, partnership, and devotion.

In 1961, Richard and Judy moved to Orlando, Florida, where they established their home and raised their two sons, Richard Jr. and Scott. Richard spent more than 25 years working in the paint industry at Glidden Paints in Winter Park, Florida, building a career defined by dedication, reliability, and a strong work ethic.

While Richard took pride in his work, his greatest accomplishment was always his family. He was the consummate family man, a loving husband to Judy, and a devoted father who took an active role in his sons’ lives. Whether attending their activities, cheering them on in sports, or simply being there when they needed him, Richard made his family his priority. His steady support, encouragement, and presence helped create memories and traditions that his family will treasure for generations.

Richard enjoyed the simple pleasures that made life special. He was a loyal Miami Dolphins fan, enjoyed bowling in leagues alongside his sons, and treasured playing golf with Richard Jr. and Scott. These shared experiences were about much more than sports; they were opportunities to spend time together, strengthen family bonds, and create lasting memories.

As his family grew, Richard took pride in the next generations and the legacy of love that surrounded him. His role as a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather was among the most meaningful parts of his life. The time spent with family, the traditions passed down, and the memories made together will continue to connect generations long after his passing.

Richard will be remembered for his devotion to Judy, his love for his sons and their families, his strong work ethic, and the importance he placed on being there for the people he loved. His life was a testament to the enduring value of commitment, hard work, and family. Though he will be deeply missed, the love he gave and the example he set will remain in the hearts of those who knew him.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Judy Basen; his two sons, Richard Basen Jr. and his wife, Cindy Basen, and Scott Basen and his wife, Kim Basen.

He is also survived by his grandchildren: Richard Basen III, Lauren Lecius, and Samantha Basen, children of Richard Jr. and Cindy; and Zachary Basen and Wyatt Basen, children of Scott and Kim. Richard also leaves behind his great-grandson, Vincent Lecius, son of Lauren and Zachary Lecius.

Richard’s family takes comfort in the love they shared, the memories they created, and the lasting legacy he leaves behind. His life touched those closest to him in countless ways, and his influence will continue through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild.

He was a loving husband, a devoted father, a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, and the heart of his family. He will be forever loved and never forgotten.
