Scott Haselwood

October 14, 1921 — April 28, 2014

Our beloved father, grandfather, greatgrandfather, brother, uncle, and friend joined his wife, Betty, and longtime friend, Jesus on April 28, 2014.

Scott was born in Thomas, Oklahoma, October 14, 1921, to William and Ruth Haselwood. He spent time in Tonkawa and Shawnee, and grew up in what is now Midwest City, all in Oklahoma. He and his sisters, Marjorie and Betty, shared adventures on Buckwheat Ranch, the family homestead. He attended Central High School in Oklahoma City and drew an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. It was there he met the love of his life, Betty Schneider, a friend of his sister, Betty. He went on to serve on the destroyer USS Leary in the North Atlantic during WWII. Upon his stateside return, Betty and Scotty married on December 9, 1944.

After the war, Scott Betty moved to Oklahoma and together, they lovingly raised four children.

Janie arrived first, quickly followed by Bill. In the midst of working as a railway postman and raising a family, Scott earned his Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Oklahoma. After he graduated from OU, he and the family moved to Florissant, Missouri, where he took a position with McDonnellDouglas. While in Missouri he worked, played, and attended graduate school at St. Louis University where he earned a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering. Ten years after Bill, along came twins, Elaine and Ellen. He moved his family to Orlando, Florida, for a new adventure as he took a position with Martin Marietta. He was a true rocket scientist working in the early years of the US space program.

Scott was a charter member of both Florissant Valley Christian Church and later Pershing Avenue Christian Church where he served as Elder and Elder Emeritus. In his professional career, church, and community service, he was an admired leader, innovator and mentor. Garnering recognition as a man of action not of words, the plaques, awards, certificates of appreciation, meritorious achievement and outstanding leadership citations filled the walls and shelves of his study to overflowing. One of his most prizedHe was a 32nd Degree Mason.

He was a man whose work ethic was beyond compare. After retirement, he carried that same dedication to numerous volunteer positions. He lent his computer expertise to the FDLE Orlando Regional Crime Laboratory and First United Methodist Church where he worked with a group of retired Martin men who refurbished computers for overseas missions. He also went on two mission trips to Peru with a group from Winter Park Presbyterian Church to take the gift of eye glasses to remote villages. He served as president and board chair for Retirees Association of Martin Marietta RAMM as well as pro bono consultant for several state science and engineering fairs. He was a volunteer at the Orlando Science Center. His strong faith was evident in his lifelong service to others.

Scotty and Betty always loved travel. Retirement freed them up to expand those experiences worldwide with trips to China, India, Russia, Turkey, Egypt and more. Of course, their favorite trips were to see their farflung family and friendsespecially their grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. In the end, as in the beginning, he was a simple, kind, and gentle man, with a deeprooted faith and a giant heart that overflowed with grace, joy and love.
